Eyre Square drainage crux despite €15m revamp

Rehabilitation of the grass area in Eyre Square is expected to be completed later today – the work involved a reseeding and a returfing (resodding) of parts of Kennedy Park.

Milestone Inventive – the company that has organised the Christmas Market in the Square for the past four years – are funding the work, estimated to cost several thousand euro.

A City Council report and a city councillor had raised concerns earlier this year over damage to the grass area of the park due to the impact of the Christmas Market.

But separate concerns have been voiced about ongoing drainage problems in the Square – despite an ‘enhancement’ scheme completed in 2006 at a cost of €15 million.

Managing Director of Milestone Inventive, Maria Moynihan Lee, told the Galway City Tribune that the reseeding and returfing work had turned out very well and confirmed that plans were already in place to stage the market at the same location next Christmas.

“Since 2011, every year we’ve improved on different aspects of the market and our ambition for 2015 is to make it even better again. It is a tremendous boost to the local economy,” she said.
