Five new staff will be provided to the Department of Social and Family Affairs in Galway city to deal with the rise in unemployment.

The appointments are necessary to help deal with the increasing number of people
applying for social welfare services.

Overall, one hundred and fifteen workers are being transferred from their existing civil service jobs to 48 separate social welfare offices around the country.

This follows news earlier this week that unemployment reached seven point eight percent last month – the largest one month increase on record.

Social and Family Affairs Minister Mary Hanafin says the extra staff will ease the
pressure offices face because of rising unemployment.
