From this week’s Galway City Tribune – Extra Gardaí will be drafted into Galway next week for the unofficial student Rag Week – including the infamous ‘Donegal Tuesday’ event.

Gardaí confirmed to the Galway City Tribune that there will be more officers on duty and a clamp down on antisocial behaviour.

“We will have extra Gardaí on duty for the week, there will be an increase in officers on duty and we will be monitoring conduct closely for antisocial behaviour,” a spokesperson said.

Last year there were ten arrests by Gardaí for antisocial behaviour and public order offences, mainly involving revellers who were so intoxicated they had to be arrested for their own safety.

Meanwhile, Mayor of Galway Mike Cubbard has urged NUI Galway to engage with the students’ union to return Rag Week to the campus to bring control over festivities to ensure the safety of students and peace of mind for residents.

Thousands of young people are expected to descend on the city for Rag Week, which was ‘banned’ by NUIG and GMIT in 2011 following serious incidents of antisocial behaviour.
