Extra Gardai brought in for Rag Week

EXTRA Gardaí have been drafted into Galway this week to monitor the increased activity expected in the city as thousands of students from both GMIT and NUIG enjoy their Rag Weeks.
It has been several years since the two colleges hosted their Rag Weeks simultaneously, and according to GMIT’s Student Union President, Padraig Flesk, “things did get a little crazy last time the two Rags came together”.
The huge numbers expected in the city present safety issues for both the Gardaí and student representatives who try to ensure that the week passes off without any incidents.
“Twenty thousand students will be out and about in the city every night this week — and that doesn’t include all the other students who might make a trip to Galway from other colleges for a few nights,” said Flesk.
Students’Union Representatives from both NUIG and GMIT met with Gardaí over recent weeks to discuss possible security and public order issues that might arise over the week.
