Extension planned for Seamount College in Kinvara

The Board of Management at Seamount College in Kinvara has sought planning permission for an extension to cater for increasing student numbers.

An application has been lodged with Galway County Council for permission to construct a single storey extension to the side of the school which will include additional classroom accommodation, circulation and toilets and a new pedestrian entrance to the ground floor.

There will also be a new vehicular entrance to the school on the Gort Road with a drop-off and set-down area on the school grounds.

“The school is under considerable pressure with increasing student numbers and classroom space as well as access and drop-off to the rear.

“In terms of impact, the proposed extension is considered to have a positive impact on the existing buildings (which is a protected structure) where it seeks to enhance the overall building and site, in particular through the re-establishment of the south-facing walled courtyard/orchard to the rear.

“The drop-off area and additional parking is to alleviate congestion problems that we have been experiencing for a number of years, particularly at drop-off and collection times pre and post school. As well as causing congestion in Kinvara each morning and evening and during any school events, this is posing a major health and safety concern for our students.

“We would also take the opportunity to urge the extending and relocation of the existing 50km speed limit sign on the Gort Road (close to the existing rear pedestrian gate) to further out the approach road and with traffic calming measures to be provided to slow oncoming traffic,” the application reads.

Earlier this month, the school’s board was granted permission for three prefab classrooms – the County Council will allow them to stay in place, while the plans for the new extension are progressed.
