Experimental punks push the boundaries to and Fro

Experimental punk outfit Fro tend to push the boundaries with everything they write. Bouncing around various styles and themes, the Galway City four-piece rarely tie a single song down to one genre. Their latest single Stacy, a pulsating mish-mash of screeching guitar and noisy, layered vocals, is typically innovative and undoubtedly the group’s most comprehensive release to date.
Stacy is set for release on April 11. Unfortunately, like most acts around Ireland, Fro have had to postpone any forthcoming gigs for the foreseeable future. As a result, single launches in Dublin’s Underground Venue and Galway’s Róisín Dubh are no longer set to take place. It makes online support for Fro’s new single all the more important.
“We recorded the single in Sonic Studios in Dublin with Daniel Fox from Girl Band,” drummer Naoise Jordan Cavanagh recalls. “I had recorded with him before with my other band Vulture Casino. He kind of co-produced the song. He had a lot of input with bass tones and stuff like that. He played a pedal on the song to put his touch on it. A lot of people know about Daniel through Girl Band… It’s great to have him and it’s really cool to have him put his fingerprint on this track.”
Two quarters of Fro boast backgrounds in sound production and they are quick to avail of their respective skillsets. The impact of Daniel Fox is clear on the track – the Girl Band bass player has worked with countless Irish acts in the last couple of years including Paddy Hanna and Silverbacks.
“With Vulture Casino, we didn’t ask Daniel to produce or anything,” Naoise notes. “It was pretty much recorded live apart from the vocals. With Fro it was kind of different – we recorded bass and drums together but everything else was done separately. Our singer and guitarist both study sound production… Our guitarist Jack mixed it himself.
“We had a lot of cool production ideas but we were open to Daniel’s input too. It was a lot more focused – it wasn’t a case of going in and banging out the song. It was very under the microscope and very focused.”
