An exhibition of work by members of The Galway Art Club will be launched at The Kenny Gallery, Galway this Friday, and will run until February 24.

The exhibition, which celebrates 80 years of the Art Club, consists of some 100 paintings, drawings and sculpture by deceased members of the group.

Artists featured include Clare Sheridan, Charles Lamb, Archie Barnett, Matt Flynn, Geraldine Dillon, Hubert Broderick, Redmond Corbett and Fr Jack O’Hanlon among others. All the pieces being displayed been donated from private and public collections and while they aren’t for sale, they offer an insight into the rich history of the club and the diverse talent it attracted.

A book on the development of the Art Club will also be launched this Friday.

Written by Alison Titley from Tuam, it stemmed from her exploration into her father’s involvement with the Tuam Art Club. Along the way, she discovered that he had also exhibited with the Galway Art Club – and she began to dig deeper.

As she interviewed relatives of the founders and gathered information, she realised the Club’s importance, and the talent showed by many of its members through the years.

Alison convinced the Art Club to hold a major exhibition to mark its 80th anniversary, and she also produced a book recording its early years.
