EUROPE TO DELIVER JUDGEMENT ON CITY OUTER BYPASS

The European court of justice is expected to deliver its decision on the Galway city outer bypass tomorrow.

The decision is not a ruling on the bypass, but will determine the process officials must follow if planning permission is to be secured for the project.

Campaigner Peter Sweetman took the case to Europe arguing a previous decision to grant planning permission was invalid as it breached the EU habitats directive.

Last November, the advocate general of the ECJ issued her opinion on the case, saying the eastern segment would have an adverse environmental effect on the site.

Galway West TD Seán Kyne says tomorrow’s decision will have consequences on the next stages for the road project.
