Galway Bay fm newsroom – North West Fine Gael MEP, Jim Higgins, is welcoming the support of the European Parliament for an emergency call system to be fitted in cars.

The technology will use the 112 emergency numbers to alert emergency services automatically if there is a serious crash anywhere in Galway or around the country.

Emergency call devices that automatically alert rescue services to car crashes must be fitted in all new models of cars and light vans in the E.U by October 2015.

It can be decomissioned if the motorist feels an emergency response is not needed.
