EU COMMISSIONER TO LOOK AT FISHING INDUSTRY OFF WEST COAST

An EU Commisioner has told a local MEP that he would “look seriously” at proposals to save the fishing industry off the west coast of Ireland.

Local MEP Sean O’ Neachtain of Spiddal, attended a crisis meeting with EU fisheries commissioner Jo Berg in Brussels yesterday.

Irish representatives told EU officials that unless a ban on fishing for cod, haddock and whiting in 2009 is overturned at an EU summit of fisheries ministers later this month, future EU propsals would wipe out a large proportion of the fishing sector in the west.
