Escape from football madness with ‘The Same Old Story’ at Crane Bar
Date Published: 07-Jun-2012
Local company, Cabaret Café present That Same Old Story, their new theatre piece at the Crane bar this Sunday, June 10 at 7pm.
The play comes to the Crane fresh from its recent triumph at the Fleadh na gCuach, and its presentation coincides with Ireland’s first match in the European championship.
The Same Old Story by writer and humorist Gerry Conneely is a play about love, life and sexual politics.
The humorous and poignant show is set in a bar/restaurant and features two couples. Katie and Conor are in the first flush of new love. In fact when the audience first meets them they are just surfacing for air after three days of energetic love-making. Meanwhile, another unrelated older couple in the same venue, Frank and Maggie are contemplating divorce.
That Same Old Story brings together the emotional experience of life and love in a series of interwoven patterns, all of which come together in the final poignant scenes.
The script also plays on the subtle yet undeniable differences in the mindset of men and women.
Music and singing are part of the fabric of this dramatic comedy.
The songs are all jazz cabaret classics from the forties and fifties including As Time Goes By, I Want To Be Loved By You, A Fine Romance, Stormy Weather and more. These songs were chosen for their emotional tempo, which serves to heighten the dramatic tension between the characters. The songs are performed by cast members, Malika McCarthy, Eoghan Burke and Deidre Cunningham, who join Gerry Conneely on stage for the production.
Soccer widows or indeed a soccer widowers who are wondering how they might possibly avoid a barrage of footballs on Sunday evening, could do worse than head down to the Crane bar for 7pm for a musical and theatrical treat.
