The Environmental Protection Agency has strengthened Mervue Residents case to have safe uncontaminated water pumped to their taps by the city council.

Senior EPA official Michael Henry says it’s the responsiblity of Galway City council to bring clean water right to the household tap in Mervue, not just as far as the stopcock.

Mr Henry was responding to questions from city councillor Declan McDonnell on the lead contamination at the West Regional Authority this week.

Mervue residents are still having to pay for adequate drinking and cooking water despite some free water being delivered by the city council.

Cllrs McDonnell, Terry O’Flaherty and Brian Walsh are now planning to seek funding from the Department of the Environment to pay for the replacement of connection pipes to Mervue homes.
