The Minister for the Environment says Galway City Council must take immediate action to address the city’s water contamination crisis.

Residents in four parts of the city, Mervue, Shantalla, Bohermore and The Claddagh have been advised not to drink their tap water after high levels of lead were detected in the supply.

It’s understood council engineers are working on providing alternative water taps in the Mervue area and these should be up and running shortly.

So far the City Council and the HSE West have failed to confirm the level of lead detected or how long the contamination has been ongoing.

However, Galway Bay Fm News las learnt that in one house in Shantalla there has been a lead reading of 160 micrograms, when the acceptable level is 25 micrograms
