Environment Minister calls for county council to show commitment on South Connemara fire station

Galway bay fm newsroom -The Environment Minister says the county council needs to show real commitment if his Department is to consider funding a fire service in South Connemara.

The campaign to provide a fire station in the region was first mooted almost 20 years ago.

However, it was only agreed at a meeting of the County Council this week to lodge a formal application for funding with the Department of Environment.

Galway West TD Seán Kyne raised the matter in the Dáil this afternoon saying that while day to day running of the service would be a matter for the county council, capital costs would be considered by the Department.

He added that Udaras na Gaeltachta would be willing to offer old buildings for the provision of a service.

A recent review of fire cover services, based on the risk element, found there was no conclusive case for a fire station in the South Connemara area.

It did however recommend a series of community fire safety measures to enhance the safety of communities.

Speaking in the Dáil, Minister Phil Hogan said he was surprised the council had not prioritised the matter sooner
