The decision on the cost of public water supplies to households will be taken by the Commision for Energy Regulation and the new system is due to come into force in 2014.

Jim Cullen, director for Water Services gave this information at yesterdays Galway County Council meeting.

Providing metres in houses and other dwellings will be the first part of the process.

Mr Cullen said that it may not be possible to put metres individually in some premises such as blocks of apartments.

He said there would be a flat rate and a usage charge at the initial stages.

Mr Cullen said that the Council staff would carry out installations and that personnel could be moved from different departments if necessary.

The County Council will be involved in water services in tandem with the new body Water Ireland until at least 2017.
