End of the line for Cappataggle PO

It will be the end of an era in two months’ time when the Cappataggle Post Office closes its doors for the last time.

An Post confirmed this week that the Post Office at Cappataggle will be closed on December 31 and that customers can opt to be serviced at New Inn or Kilconnell.

The Post Office is to close despite a strong local campaign to keep it open but unlike Barnaderg, near Tuam, it did not get a reprieve and now faces the axe.

Deputy Michael Kitt this week expressed his disappointment at the decision and made a last ditch appeal to An Post to reconsider.

But An Post has already announced that it will not be advertising for the continuance of the Post Office service at Cappatagle.

Deputy Kitt said: “It was very disappointing to learn that An Post will not be advertising for the continuation of postal services for the people of the area. On many other occasions in the event of a Post Office closure, An Post has ensured a notice period of a year or two, so local people can put forward a plan to replace the services that will be lost,”

A spokesman for An Post confirmed the decision to close Cappataggle had been made and that other options would be offered to customers.

There has been a post office in Cappataggle since 1860. The post mistress, Christina Dooley passed away earlier this year and the post office is now being operated by her daughter and son-in-law but will close at the end of the year.
