Employers show signs of increased optimism at the end of disastrous year
Galway’s jobs market showed tentative signs of recovery over the final quarter of 2020 – despite the renewed impact of Covid-19 on the workplace.
But the last twelve months still proved devastating on the local front, according to the latest Jobs Index, published by IrishJobs.ie.
Galway recorded a three per cent decrease in quarterly job vacancies in the final three months of the year over the previous quarter – and overall vacancies in Galway were down 13% year-on-year.
Nationally, job vacancies grew by five per cent over that final quarter, but they remain 23% below pre-Covid levels; the biggest trend however was in remote work vacancies, which experienced notable growth, increasing by 50% quarter-on-quarter.
And, in contrast to the March–May lockdown, when economic activity ground to a halt, the employment market was more resilient in the final quarter of the year as businesses showed signs of adapting to the new Covid reality.
IrishJobs.ie GM Orla Moran said the figures showed ‘the sheer resilience of Irish businesses who have adapted and adjusted quickly to the new Covid reality’.
