Former Galway resident Emmet Scanlan plays The Crane Bar in Galway City this Friday, November 11. Now based in London, Emmet is celebrating the release of his latest EP These are the Dreams, This is the Life which was recorded in that city’s Dream Machine Music Lab by Raoul Terzi.

Limerick-born Emmet moved to London in 2011 after almost a decade in Galway. The move was prompted by seeing Irish bands who were big at home having to start all over again when the they went abroad.

“In a sense what I was trying to do was come over here and cut out some of that work for myself,” he says.

Emmet regularly collaborates with fellow ex- Galway resident and filmmaker Emmet O’Malley and provided the soundtrack for O’Malley’s short film Without Words, which has been praised by Spike Lee and viewed more than 500,000 times online Previously, O’Malley had made the video for Emmet’s 2014 single From the Inside Out.

“We wanted to get across the message of how isolating London can be,” recalls the singer. “You’re surrounded by millions of people, but at times you can feel on your own.”

These are the Dreams, This is the Life, meanwhile, explores the notion “that we are living and working in our dreams, not running towards them”, according to its creator.”Basically, it is about living in the now.”

Doors 9pm, admission free.
