Emergency water supply to be transported to Inis Meain

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Arrangements have now been made to transport emergency supplies of water to Inis Meáin in the Aran Islands as the reservoir there has only a number of days capacity left.
The Lasta Mara shipping company will bring the supplies in from Rosaveal in Connemara.
The operation is led by Galway County Council and Irish Water.
The west of Ireland led a charmed life in avoiding the big rainfall of recent days…but it’s not all good news.
People on Inis Oirr and Inis Meáin in the Aran Islands have been anxiously watching the water levels go down.
Inis Meáin is worst hit and emergency supplies of water will be ferried in from Rosaveal tomorrow morning in an operation that will continue for a fortnight. On average 50,000 gallons a day will be brought to this island. This water will come from the public scheme in Rosaveal.
No decision has been made yet about supplies to Inis Oirr which has somewhat more in reserve.
The nature of the limestone terrain means that the islands do not hold water easily and there is also less rainfall in the Aran Islands than there is in than does Connemara.
