The HSE has put an emergency protocol in place at University Hospital Galway as staff struggle to deal with high patient numbers in the emergency department.

33 patients are awaiting admission, 27 at the ED and 6 patients are waiting on trolleys on wards.

The full capacity protocol in place at UHG involves four stages.

The first three are focused on discharging patients or transferring them elsewhere, and the fourth is putting extra trolleys on wards.

The emergency action is being taken at a time when 92 beds are closed at UHG and Merlin Park hospital.

Galway INMO representative Gavan Duffy, is calling on the HSE to open the beds as a matter of urgency.
