All elective orthopaedic surgery has been postoned at Merlin Park Hospital due to staff shortages.

The postponement impacts 45 patients who were due to have surgery at the hospital this week.

The decision is due to a shortage of trained ICU nursing staff at Galway and Roscommon University Hospital Group.

The HSE says it’s actively trying to recruit a scarce grade of additional staff for the posts which have already been approved.

It adds that all affected patients have been individually contacted and advised and the cases are to be rescheduled in the New Year.
