The HSE West has contacted an 85 year old Galway City woman to say that her Home Help will no longer do “light shopping” for her.

The elderly woman is recovering from cancer and her Home Help used to shop for essentials such as milk, bread, ham and fruit to tide her over until a family member could call at the weekend.

According to the Home Help, the service was provided during her assigned working hours and the reason given to cease doing the light shopping was in order to save on petrol costs.

Senator Fidelma Healy Eames says this is ridiculous.
