Date Published: 24-Oct-2008
An East Galway national school is taking action after it was passed over for funding by the Government.
The Board of Management of Eglish National School in Ahascragh, has decided to launch a campaign for a new building.
Eglish National School has no central heating, a rotten roof, cracked walls, disintegrating windows as well as damp, mould, snails, bats and rats.
Windows are nailed shut and rabbit wire is fitted onto the inside of the windows to stop them falling in on the children.
Several children have had asthma attacks and hive outbreaks as a result of the poor ventilation.
The Education Minister Batt O’Keeffe granted 20 thousand euro for emergency repair work which was carried out over the summer months.
Principal Liz Mulry says the school is in such bad condition a new permanent school building is needed, not more repairs.
