EFFORTS TO CONTROL COUNTY GORSE FIRES CONTINUE
Date Published: 02-May-2011
Efforts to bring gorse fires across Galway under control are continuing this evening.
Fire fighters are battling an extensive bog fire that broke out in Looscaun along the main Portumna to Scariff road this afternoon.
Motorists are being advised to avoid the area if possible because of poor visibility.
Meanwhile, fire fighters are still at the scene of a gorse fire in the Rosmuc area that broke out this morning.
In the Mountbellew area, Gardaí say they are liasing with Fire fighters who continue to monitor an area of land that is still smouldering after a major fire last night.
The fire broke out in the Springlawn/Gurteen area yesterday afternoon.
As the winds and dry weather continued to feed the flames, the fire stretched along bog lands and posed a serious threat to homes in the area.
Fire crews from Mountbellew, Roscommon, and others areas were drafted in to fight the blaze with the help of a Helicopter, and managed to get it under control this morning.
Two houses in the area were saved from the flames, however local Gardaí say the fire claimed several hectares of forestry that belongs to Coillte.
This is the latest in a series of bog and gorse fires to take place in the Mountbellew area over the past few days.
