Efficient Galway do enough to halt bad run against Dubs

Galway 0-27

Dublin 0-21

A statistical anomaly – at least in the context of the teams’ respective reputations – was partially righted at Pearse Stadium on Saturday evening.

Despite the overwhelming view that Galway produce better teams and hurlers than Dublin, the results of championship clashes between the counties over the past decade have defied that opinion.

Four wins and a draw from their eight previous meetings with the Tribesmen ensured Dublin would have travelled to Salthill undaunted about what lay ahead. Unlike Kilkenny, they have no great reason for fearing Galway.

Against that background, it was past time for Galway to get the Dublin monkey off their backs and inspired by a vintage second-half display from Conor Whelan, they comfortably turned the tables on Mattie Kenny’s charges to seal their place in the Leinster Final on Saturday evening week.

Unfortunately, for the attendance of over 10,500 this was no classic. Matches against Dublin have often turned into unappealing scraps and Saturday’s round-robin tie was another of them. To compound matters, the very technical officiating of Cork’s Johnny Murphy contributed to the fractured nature of the exchanges.
