Edwards leads Utd in smash ‘n’ grab

SECOND half substitute Derek Edwards was the toast of the travelling contingent on Good Friday as he came off the bench to score the winning goal in a smash and grab mission which saw Galway United steal the spoils from a bitterly disappointed Drogheda side at United Park.

Drogheda may be rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, with just two draws to show for their first seven games, but they dominated large chunks of this game only to succumb to a sucker-punch from the visitors at a stage when it looked as though one goal would seal the issue.

United got back on track after their midweek defeat to Bohemians at Terryland and were in celebratory mood for the long journey home after securing a win which has them ten points clear of the bottom, in stark contrast to the way in which Tony Cousins’ side struggled at the start of last year’s campaign.

The winning goal came 11 minutes from time when Edwards, who had replaced Michael McGrath, got a downward header to a cross from Derek O’Brien. The ball hit the underside of the crossbar before landing in the back of the net, to give Galway an unlikely lead.
