‘The Edge of the Land’ at the Russell Gallery

The wild and wonderfully unpredictable Irish weather and its impact on colour and light has inspired a new exhibition of painting at the Russell Gallery in New Quay.

The Edge of the Land by Kathleen Moroney and Roxanne Fitzmaurice, will run at the gallery, just south of Kinvara until July 31.

Both women are fascinated by the fragile, changeable Irish landscape and both bring their own responses to bear on their paintings.

Although their materials are different – Kathleen works with acrylics, mostly on paper, while Roxanne paints with oils on board and paper – their art aims to portray the essence of the country and is as much about the wind that moves the grass, as the grass itself.

Kathleen, who has an MA in Ceramics from the Limerick College of Art and Design, lives in Kilkishen, Co Clare, and teaches in the Visual Arts Department of the Institute of Art, Design and Technology in Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin.  Her reflections on nature and the transient qualities of time and space find form in both painting and in ceramic sculpture. Her work is in the collection of the National Museum of Ireland and in collections in the US, Denmark, China and Japan.

Roxanne grew up in Wicklow and she now lives and works in Dublin. She graduated in Fine Art from the Dublin Institute of Technology and continued her studies at the National College of Art and Design. She exhibits regularly around the country in galleries such the Millcove Gallery in Cork and the Hallward Gallery in Dublin.
