CITY TRIBUNE
Eclectic selection of work in new group exhibition Staying Local
Staying Local is the title of an exhibition of paintings, prints and drawings in oil, acrylic, gouache, ink and charcoal that is currently on show in Galway City. Anton’s Café on Fr Griffin Road is hosting this celebration of artists who have been unable to sell their work publicly during Covid-19.
The seven, who are based in Kinvara, Tuam and Galway City, are presenting an eclectic mix of landscapes, bird-life, local architecture and fantasy.
The paintings by Fiona Cawley and Rachel Varden reflect ‘other worldliness’, with a collection of mystical landscapes and kaleidoscope imagery. In their work, Bernard Dooley and Stephanie McLaughlin capture local people and familiar landmarks in acrylic and oil. Sacha Hutchinson creates studies of wild birds and murmurations, while Hilary Morley creates stark drawings in charcoal to highlight the disappearing countryside of Knocknacarra. Geraldine O’Rourke from Spiddal is showing framed prints of seascapes and woodland.
