CITY TRIBUNE
Eclectic line-up for once upon a time back the West Festival
The Once Upon a Time Back the West Festival returns to Galway City this February, taking in shows in Massimo, The Blue Note, Leisureland and Róisín Dubh. A concert by Scottish indie stars Franz Ferdinand in Leisureland on Saturday, February 10, is the big draw of the weekend, but there are lots of fine shows on the bill.
Chief among them is a gig in Róisín Dubh next Friday, February 9 with Daithí, Paddy Hanna, Elaine Mai and Slow Place Like Home, making for a diverse evening’s entertainment.
Slow Place Like Home is the brainchild of Donegal’s Keith Mannion and the trio play esoteric music that combines electro with live guitars. Elaine Mai released an excellent EP last year and is at the forefront of Irish electronic music. She makes great use of her voice, writing songs that stick in the head. Daithí will be familiar to anyone who has frequented the Róisín Dubh over the past few years. Writing genuine floor-fillers, his performances take in house music and traditional Irish sounds. He has played at the major festivals and did an impressive remix for All Tvvins.
Dubliner Paddy Hanna, finally, is one to watch for 2018, with his second album due for release next month. A songwriter of wit and melody, his recent release, Toulouse The Kisser is worth seeking out.
