EAST GALWAY TURF CUTTERS MAINTAIN PRESENCE ON PROTECTED BOG
Date Published: 13-Apr-2012
Turf cutters are continuing to maintain their presence at a bog in East Galway this afternoon despite being told not to cut turf by department officials.
Up to 30 turf cutters staged a stand off with Gardaí and parks and wildlife rangers at the Barroughter bog this lunchtime.
It was eventually agreed to allow Gardaí inspect the site, who have now left the scene.
Turf cutters have placed blocks on roads leading to the bog which is one of 53 bogs that has been designated a special area of conservation.
