Fianna Fáil nominees for the Loughrea electoral area will go forward for interviews today. (wed 10)

The interviews take place at the Raheen Woods Hotel in Athenry and nominees will be interviewed by a panel.

This is the first round towards being nominated as a contendor for the local elections.

A final decision on nominees will be made by the national constituency commitee which is chaired by An Tánaiste Mary Coughlan.

Tomorrow the Fianna Fáil party will interview nominees for the Ballinasloe electoral area at Gullane’s Hotel in Ballinasloe.

The new format for selecting candidates is causing dissent among grassroots members, who feel the old way of a selection convention was the best method.

Meanwhile, East Galway Fine Gael will hold a convention in Ballinasloe tomorrow to select the team to contest the local elections next June.

Over 250 delegates are expected to attend the convention, which will be chaired by Senator Nicky McFadden from Athlone.

The convention will begin at Gullane’s Hotel in Ballinasloe at 8.30pm tomorrow.
