Early shower for Mervue in Cup

MERVUE United’s hopes of causing an FAI Cup upset were extinguished within the opening nine minutes of their clash with Premier Division outfit Dundalk at Terryland Park on Friday evening.

The concession of two goals from Ger Rowe and Shaun Kelly during the initial exchanges left a depleted Mervue side shell-shocked and facing a mountain to climb as they struggled to resuscitate their chances of progressing to round four of the cup.

A Dave Goldbey goal midway through the second half looked to have restored hopeas Mervue began to look promising in their pursuit of an equaliser, but the game was cruelly put beyond reach when Declan O’Brien stole a third goal for the visitors against the run of play 11 minutes from time.

Johnny Glynn was forced to choose his team from a skeletal playing staff without the services of six regulars due to injury, and was further hampered by the absence of captain Eric Browne through suspension. This resulted in a debut for U17 player Martin Conneely, who started in the centre of defence.
