Early second-half goal feast helps Galway carry the day

NOW, this was a tonic, one to lighten the heart. Drubbed by Donegal in the league, five points down at half-time in this All-Ireland series Group D clash, underdogs Galway confounded everyone but themselves with an outstanding second half display.

If this was a coming-of-age performance for Gerry Fahy’s young squad, time will tell, but on Saturday they revealed something of what many believe to be their true nature. This was the opening of the clam to unveil the pearl inside.

The opening two minutes of the second period were just incredible. Within 30 seconds, the Tribeswomen had the ball in the net – full-back Sarah Lynch overturning Donegal possession to set in motion a move that resulted in Nicola Ward hammering home a brilliant goal. The flag of defiance was raised.

Another 30 seconds later, they had a second. This time Ailbhe Davoren fed Olivia Divilly and she in turn set up interval substitute Ailish Morrissey for a superb finish. All of a sudden, Galway were in front.

And it just got better and better as yet another 30 seconds later Megan Glynn set up Morrissey for her second – Galway’s third – before, moments later, Divilly converted a free to push the victors 3-5 to 1-6 ahead. Maxi Curran’s Donegal, with their much vaunted attack, were left stunned.
