‘Early days’ on new Galway City centre traffic changes
From this week’s Galway City Tribune – It’s early days as far as the latest city centre traffic changes go – but the aim is to make Cross Street and Middle Street far more pedestrian friendly over the coming months.
Since last week, the direction of traffic flow on Middle Street has been reversed – the aim being to reduce vehicular flow along this route.
City Council traffic surveys had identified that much of the Middle Street traffic – before the latest change – came from vehicles wanting to access Augustine Street.
Now, traffic can access Augustine Street by turning left from Merchants Road, up Lower Abbeygate Street, before taking a ‘quick left’ towards the Augustinian.
Cross Street has now become a ‘no-go area’ for traffic coming from Flood Street and on towards the junction of Mainguard and Bridge Street.
The section of Cross Street – between Quay Street/High Street, and the mini-roundabout on the entry to Lombard Street/Market Street – will only be open for morning deliveries by vehicles turning right from Bridge Street.
City Council Senior Engineer, Uinsinn Finn, told the Galway City Tribune, that the traffic changes were in line with a key aim of the City Development plan, namely to improve pedestrian access and facilities.
