€800,000 hit leaves Galway GAA facing a financial crux

AFTER losing out on almost €800,000 in gate receipts due to the pandemic last year, Galway GAA Treasurer Mike Burke is pleading with supporters to get behind their up-and-coming fundraising drive as they look to boost the coffers ahead of the 2021 season.

In 2019, Galway GAA enjoyed a return of approximately €1 million on gate receipts and, while the introduction of live streaming of games generated €200,000 in revenue in 2020 to offset a portion of this, there is still a significant shortfall to be made up in finance.

The money traditionally raised through gate receipts covers such costs as preparing inter-county teams, running club championships (referees and programmes etc.) and maintaining their county grounds, among other expenses.

Consequently, Galway GAA will be unveiling their first fundraiser in a series of events next week and County Committee Treasurer Burke is hoping Galway supporters will, once again, get behind their county.

“The message would be for the general public to support us in our fundraisers, in any small way at all. It all counts,” says the Kinvara clubman.

“We will definitely be making a huge effort to fundraise this year. We have to, because there is no money coming from anywhere. We have no (National) Leagues at the moment and there is nothing yet coming from Croke Park.”
