E Street’s Jake Clemons ready to rock Galway

Published

on

Some musicians just love being on the road and Jake Clemons, who plays Róisín Dubh on Wednesday next, December 11, is among them.  As the saxophone player in the E Street Band, he has spent the past two years playing with Bruce Springsteen. Prior to that, he was part of The Swell Season with Glen Hansard.

Touring all over the world is one thing, but some Springsteen shows clock in at four hours. How did Jake find the time to write and record his Embracing Light EP?
“It was pretty tricky!” he acknowledges. “I wrote a lot while I was on tour. I brought a guitar, a keyboard and computer with me. I had a mock studio in my hotel room. What I would do then is record demo tracks and send them off to my producer in the States. He would get the musicians in and eventually when I came home, on a couple of days’ break, I’d be able to jump in the studio and put a bit more polish on it.”
The songs on Embracing Light are up tempo, rocky numbers and the title track points to a theme that Jake follows throughout the EP.
“It’s really this idea of hope for today, hope for right now,” he says. “We can have hope for the future, but when is that going to get here? I’ve got this philosophy that life begins when you open your eyes in the morning.”
He’s been playing saxophone since childhood, but the burst of horns at the start of Song for Hope is not something Jake had in mind initially.
“I originally wrote it without any brass and I was trying to figure out how to broaden that sound a little bit more. It kind of came out in this almost Van Morrison sense, it turned out a big bigger than I thought it would be.”

Niall Teague and Pádraic Joyce.

Folk duo Niall Teague and Pádraic Joyce are launching their new album What Will We Be, a  blend of folk, Americana and acoustic music, this Friday, May 19, at 8pm in An Taibhdhearc.

The success of their well-received 2020 release Taobh le Taobh, as well as recent successes at the Pan Celtic and Oireachtas Song Contests, spurred the duo on to record this new album which represents many years of collaboration and musical development.

It features Niall and Pádraic on vocals, harmonies, and acoustic guitars, Maidhc Ó hÉanaigh on double bass and Neil Fitzgibbon on fiddle. The catchy title track, What Will We Be, features contributions from percussionist Jim Higgins (The Stunning, Christy Moore, Paul Brady) and haunting, driving melodies on vocals, guitar, and fiddle.

Themes of love and hope are woven through Come Away with Me which features interplay between piano and fiddle as well as rich vocal harmonies.

People, places, and broken dreams are celebrated and lamented on Martin and Tom, Guitar Gold, Memories of You and Achill Island. The influence of David Henry Thoreau’s novel Walden features on the tracks Simple and Wise and Walden, with the beauty of nature, escape and simple pleasures at their core.

The album moves from minimalistic folk ballads such as Galway Ghost to swirling, string-laden arrangements on the song Neptune, both of which are influenced by maritime tales from Galway. Much of the work on this album was supported by the Arts Council, including work with musical arranger Eoin Corcoran and the string ensemble Treo.

The album will be launched this Friday, May 19, at 8pm in an Taibhdhearc. Tickets €22, plus booking fee at Eventbrite.ie.
