Dunne delivers glowing half-time report on his Galway FC side
As the Airtricity League season heads into a two-week mid-season break, Galway FC manager Tommy Dunne says he is delighted with the progress his side has made, but is warning against anyone getting carried away by a recent run of results which has seen his side now installed as favourites to win the First Division title.
Writing in his programme notes for Friday’s game with Wexford Youths, Dunne admitted that the recent run of results which has seen wins over Cobh Ramblers (5-1) and Shelbourne (4-2) in the league, and a 3-1 win in the FAI Cup over UCD, has been “outstanding”, but he cautioned there was still plenty of football to be played.
“Nobody in the squad or management is getting carried away. We can become a good team, I have no doubt about it. Of course we are only starting off and there is a need to be patient and realistic,” he wrote in his notes, and he continued the message when speaking to the media after the game.
“There is still loads of football to play, I think it will go to the wire and still think there will be 4 or 5 teams involved at the end,” he said.
The players have been given a week off now, and will return to training on Sunday ahead of the game with Longford Town on Friday week, and Dunne says that while the break may be coming at the wrong time considering their run of results, on the other hand the players are in need of a break.
“We’d probably rather if we could keep going but in saying that, the boys can’t go at that pace all the time, so we’ll have to address the rest and making sure they’re coming back in good health and good shape for the second phase.
