DUNMORE MccHales qualified for the final of the intermediate football championship with a seven-point win over St. Brendan’s in Tuam Stadium on Saturday.

In what was a competitive contest, the final score was somewhat harsh on a St. Brendan’s side who had absolutely no luck on the day. Nevertheless, Dunmore were undoubtedly the more clinical side throughout the match and took their opportunities impressively.

Denis Fallon’s side now face Naomh Anna, Leitir Móir in the title decider, with a huge prize of promotion to the senior championship on offer. Although they secured the win against St. Brendan’s last weekend, Dunmore will likely need to improve for the decider, as their semi-final victory wasn’t a vintage performance.

It was St. Brendan’s who dominated the early exchanges, with a fifth minute goal chance presenting itself to Eric Walsh, whose ground shot went narrowly wide. Two minutes later, Paddy Downey opened the scoring for Brendan’s with an excellent point from the left wing. Brendan Carr soon equalised for Dunmore with an impressive 50-yard score.

With the wind behind them, Dunmore began to dominate, but kicked five wides during the opening quarter. St. Brendan’s took the lead when Karl Healy scored a good point, after a good delivery from Darragh O’Malley. Carr equalised with a pointed free at the other end, before St. Brendan’s lost Pádraig Ó,Cellacháin to injury, just before the water break.

Dunmore retook the lead when Shane McGrath pointed from the right corner, after showing great footwork under pressure. Two minutes later, Conall Greally made it 0-3 apiece after claiming an attacking mark. Dunmore then got a significant slice of fortune with their next score.
