Dunkellin drainage proves a point!

THE success of the Dunkellin river and Aggard Stream Flood Relief schemes near Craughwell – during the recent flood crisis situations – shows that solutions can be found in other areas, it was claimed this week.

Connacht IFA Regional Chair, Pat Murphy – who farms in the Ardrahan area of South Galway – said that the success of this scheme was a clear example of what could be achieved if the will and the drive was there to carry out the necessary works.

“This was an example of where the pinch-points in the channel were identified and widened and where the capacity of the channel from the sea back was increased.

“It has made a huge difference to the people of the area but we feel very strongly that this type of project can be replicated in many other flood prone areas, if the will is there to get the job done,” said Pat Murphy.

He said that there had to be a renewed urgency about the provision of ‘overflow tracks’ to take the flooding in the Gort area to the sea and also from Rahasane Turlough, when the waters rose.

“Again, I want to make it clear that there is no question of us wanting to drain the Turlough but we believe that a track can be put in place to take the floodwaters when the pressure comes on,” he said.
