SOME of Galway’s leading pony riders are currently blazing a trail on the national and international scene and, in the process, they are highlighting the West of Ireland’s rich pool of show jumping talent.
In terms of numbers, the is understandably the smallest but that isn’t reflected in the results. In recent weeks, Michael Duffy, Kate MacDonagh and Cian Melia have all represented Ireland abroad and the trio have featured prominently in the National Grand Prix league here at home.
Duffy is currently top of the table in Ireland’s number one pony league and his form has won him recognition with the Irish selectors for next month’s international show in Veerdan in the Netherlands.
The 14 year old from Turloughmore has secured two victories and a third place in recent weeks and is jumping faster and cleaner than ever before on Sillogue Darkey. His victory in Cavan three weeks
ago was superb but the Barnadown victory in Wexford was even better as fences were at a massive 1m40.
