DUBLIN CORONER TO WRITE TO PORTIUNCULA HOSPITAL
Date Published: 10-May-2011
The Dublin City Coroner, Dr. Brian Farrell, is to write to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe after an inquest into the death of a baby in February 2010.
A midwive told the coroners court today that she was unhappy with the treatment being given to mother, Lorraine Reilly from Duniry, Loughrea.
Baby Amber Reilly was delivered at the Ballinasloe hospital by caesarean section on February 9th last year.
According to the Evening Herald, at Baby Amber’s birth, the umbilical cord was around her neck and she suffered brain damage.
She was transferred to the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin where she died 6 days later.
The inquest heard that midwife, Anne Benson, contacted a second consultant after Dr. Peter Lukco administered the medication terbutaline during labour to Lorraine Reilly.
Dr. Lucko said that after giving the medication the patient was feeling much better.
The second consultant, Dr. Naveed Khawaja examined Mrs Higgins in the labour ward and brought her to theatre for an emergency C section.
Dr. Naveed told the coroner that he "possibly" wouldn’t have used the medication terbutaline on someone who had a previous C section.
The coroner recorded a narrative verdict in the inquest and said he would write to Portiuncula Hospital.
