Druid planning ‘largescale’ show that will tour abroad
The Board of Druid Theatre Company plans to spend a quarter of a million euro from its financial reserves next year on a “large scale production” that will tour abroad.
The new project for 2022 is described as a “significant production” in Druid’s Directors’ Report and Financial Statements for 2020. It will tour nationally and internationally next year, directors said.
“The Druid Board have reviewed its planned activities for 2022 and determined that there will be a need outside of the traditional funding streams for a spend of reserves at a significant level towards producing a large scale 2022 production which has yet to be announced. The Board has designated €250,000 towards this project,” it stated.
The report said that the company’s reserves policy took account of the fact that a significant portion of the accumulated reserves of €603,687 is “restricted towards the upkeep of the Mick Lally Theatre and other tangible fixed assets held by the company”.
The report also noted that reserves of €900,000 were designated to meet the minimum reserves for the short-term continuation of operations.
Elsewhere in the report, it was noted that Druid recorded a deficit of just over €66,000 in 2020.
This arose “primarily due to box-office income being well below what was budgeted”, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on its ability to perform to live audiences in Ireland or abroad.
