Druid launches county tour and welcomes new FUEL artists
Druid Theatre will be criss-crossing County Galway next year to perform a series of one-act plays from the Irish canon for Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture.
The plays will include: The Rising of the Moon and The Gaol Gate by Lady Gregory; A Pound on Demand and Bedtime Story by Seán O’Casey; The Briery Gap by Thomas Cornelius (TC) Murray; The King of Spain’s Daughter by Waterford-born Teresa Deevy and On the Outside by Tom Murphy.
They will be performed by a cast of 11 actors.
Druid: The Galway Tour, is a Galway 2020 commission and will run from April to July. It will offer people access to rehearsals and interactions with the company as well as some unique outdoor performances.
The company will engage with local groups of all ages, interests and cultures in towns and villages in its largest ever tour of Galway.
The Galway Tour has replaced Middle Island which was Druid’s initial project for 2020, but which the company withdrew last year due to 2020’s budgetary constraints.
Middle Island was inspired by Colm Tóibín’s novel and play Testament. A collaboration with Corsica and Theatre Cymru, Wales, this epic production would have involved a boat journey from Rossaveal to Inis Meáin, with a cast of 10 actors led by Marie Mullen as well as 20 people from the community. But after working on the project for two years, Druid withdrew it last year due to budgetary issues and has since worked with 2020 on creating an alternative project for the Capital of Culture.
