Druid Theatre’s next production, The Beacon, a new play by Dublin writer Nancy Harris, will premiere at Galway’s Town Hall Theatre next month, before going on to the Gate Theatre for a four-week run as part of Dublin Theatre Festival.

The Beacon will be directed by Druid’s Artistic Director Garry Hynes with a cast of Jane Brennan, Rae Gray, Dan Monaghan, Cillian Ó Gairbhí and Marty Rea. It’s a co-production between Druid and the Gate, the first time the companies have ever joined forces.

Nancy Harris’s adaptation of The Red Shoes was performed at the Gate in 2017, while The Beacon, which was commissioned by Druid in 2016, marks her first outing with the Galway company as Druid continues its year of new writing.

And as The Beacon premieres in Druid, another of Harris’s plays, Two Ladies, will premiere at London’s Bridge Theatre. That will be directed by Nicholas Hytner and stars Zoë Wannamaker.

In The Beacon, Beiv, a celebrated artist, has moved from suburban Dublin to her holiday cottage on an island off the coast of West Cork. But a dark shadow hangs over her. When her estranged son and his new young wife arrive to stay, she is faced with some difficult questions.
