Drug dealers and drink drivers nabbed at Covid checkpoints
From this week’s Galway City Tribune – The pubs might be closed, but Galway Gardaí are still detecting motorists for driving their vehicles while under the influence of either drink or drugs – a number of alleged drug dealers have also been arrested.
Over the course of the past month – since the introduction of the first raft of coronavirus restrictions including the closure of the pubs – six arrests have been made in the city area for drink driving.
Over recent weeks in Galway, there have also been six motorists arrested for the alleged sale and supply of illegal drugs.
In addition to that, there were also two cases of motorists in the city being arrested and testing positively for driving while under the influence of drugs.
Chief Superintendent Tom Curley told the Galway City Tribune that the number of drink-driving arrests, during a period when the pubs were closed, was ‘a worrying trend on our roads’.
“For a start it is worrying that these people are continuing to travel at a time of restriction but it really does make it a lot worse when they are driving under the influence of either drink or drugs.
“We have a whole network of checkpoints in place – first and foremost to deal with the coronavirus emergency restrictions – but these checkpoints will also be used to enforce the drink driving laws,” he said.
