Drink drive crackdown hits home

MOTORISTS in rural parts of County Galway are more compliant with the drink driving warnings than their city counterparts, after the nationwide Bank Holiday weekend crackdown.
Less than a dozen people were arrested for drunken driving across the county – while more than double that figure were apprehended in the city.
However, Garda chiefs are warning motorists that an even bigger clampdown on drunken driving will take place this Easter Bank Holiday weekend. The situation in rural parts of the county is in direct contrast to what happened in the city over the St. Patrick’s weekend when 26 motorists were apprehended for exceeding the drink driving limits.
The Gardaí in Galway city expressed disappointment over the fact that many motorists were not heeding the high profile warnings. And yet in the country areas, motorists showed a lot more restraint with Gardaí saying that the number of arrests was akin to that of a normal weekend.
