Drama in store as Galway Theatre Festival returns

Galway Theatre Festival opens this Friday, April 29, and runs until Saturday, May 7, offering nine days of theatre, circus, spectacle, and storytelling in the city and on the beaches of North Connemara.
The festival kicks off with Tart, a comedic, semi-autobiographical look at the development of a contemporary woman from ‘tart’ to wife as she deals with the men, devices and apps that hinder and help her along the way.
Directed by Amy Reade, the cast includes Eimear Finan, Eoghan Collins, Delia Keane, Os Leanse. This play with strong language and themes of a sexual nature is for ages 16 + is a co -production between writer Eimear and Galway Theatre Festival. It runs from this Friday to Monday, May 2, at 8pm nightly in the city’s Mick Lally Theatre at Druid Lane.
There’s more new writing from Niamh Ryan with Girl In A Cell. This humorous depiction of a teenager’s view of the Irish medical system is also a tender and sensitive drama about life, illness and resilience. It’s at the city’s Nuns’ Island Theatre from May 4-6 at 6.30pm and on May 7 at 3pm.
Paddy Goes to Petra is the tale of a proud Irish man whose lust for life vanished long ago. It follows middle-aged farmer, Paddy, as he seeks to rediscover his wonder for the world, overcome tragedy and begin an exciting love affair… with himself!
Tipperary playwright Áine Ryan was inspired to write this work after a trip to Jordan when she met and became friends with local people and discovered the similarities between Irish and Jordanian cultures. It will take place on Friday and Saturday, May 6 and 7, at An Taibhdhearc, Middle Street.
