Drama and fun on menu in celebration for small people

Two shows for children will be staged at the Town Hall Theatre Studio on Saturday, January 31, as part of a new European Commission initiative, Small Size Day, celebrating creativity for young children.  The productions, from local companies, are being presented by Baboró Arts Festival for Children to mark Small Size Day.

The first, Mollylu’s Circus Playtime by Maria Auletta is a 30 minute show about a child who is having fun with objects she finds while she is playing.

Spinning plates become hats, rings become necklaces, and scarves become a skirt. But she doesn’t want to play alone, so she invites children and parents to join in, offering those aged 4-6 an opportunity to play and learn new skills.

The Fairy Fixers from Pignut Productions is for younger children, aged 2-4. This is a gently humorous piece for pre-school children, in which the Fairy Fixers arrive to catch a shy fairy and mend her broken wing. They need lots of help from the children and a little bit of magic over the course of the 40-minute show.

Small Size Days is a new initiative, which is being presented this January in cities worldwide, from Helsinki to Madrid, London to Salzburg, Bucharest to Mexico City as well as in Galway.

Activities are being held simultaneously, with the aim of having a shared worldwide celebration of creativity for very young children.

Baboró General Manager Teenagh Cunningham is encouraging families to “save the date” and mark the new initiative with “two excellent shows from Galway companies”.

She is happy that Baboró will host this annual event in addition to its already hugely popular main festival, held in October.

Mollylu’s Circus Playtime from Maria Auletta for ages 4-6 will be staged at 10am and 11am on Saturday, January 31, and will run for 30 minutes.

The Fairy Fixers from Pignut Productions, is for children aged 2-4 | and will run at 1pm and 3pm, on Saturday, January 31, with each show being 40 minutes. The venue is the City’s Town Hall Theatre studio space.

Tickets are €5 or €16 for a family ticket (four people). Booking at http://tht.ie or www.baboro.ie, or by phone at 091-569777.
