Galway Bay fm newsroom – The draft development plan for county Galway has been adopted with a small number of amendments.

A special meeting was called today at county hall to debate the plan which presents the council’s outlook for future development of the county up to 2021.

Amendments agreed this afternoon include a proposal by Councillor Dermot Connolly that the council recognize the need for measures to address the regular and repeated flooding issues that arise along the river Shannon and related tributaries.

Other aspirations now included involve the provision of land to facilitate an airport strip, a sewerage scheme for Lackagh, and a waste water treatment plant for Corofin.

The plan stipulates the hub town of Tuam as a focus for growth, and for the first time includes the administrative area of what was formerly Ballinasloe town council.

In terms of infrastructure, the Galway city outer bypass remains a priority project and there is also a specific objective to complete the Galway greenway.

Councillors unanimously adopted the draft plan and it will now go on public display for 10 weeks.

Director of services with responsibility for planning at Galway County Council, Kevin Kelly says the plan aims to achieve balanced development across the region.
