Doyle launches Fighting Words project in Galway
A writing workshop for primary school children in Galway has been launched by award-winning author, Roddy Doyle, who set up the initial workshop in Dublin a decade ago.
Roddy Doyle and Sean Love started the first Fighting Words workshops in Dublin almost 10 years ago, and they have delivered their unique story-writing programme to tens of thousands of primary and secondary school students in the interim.
To meet the growing demand for these workshops around the country, they have developed a network of regional Fighting Words groups in Wicklow, Belfast, Cork, and Mayo, and last year Galway was added to the list.
A pilot programme was held in Spring 2017, and it proved a huge success, leading to the establishment of a Fighting Words Galway team in September.
The scheme offers workshops to primary school pupils from 3rd Class to 6th Class from the city and county, and are delivered at the Brothers of Charity in Kilcornan in Clarinbridge, and at the Galway City Museum.
The Galway scheme was recently officially launched by Doyle at the Galway City Museum, where he said there has been a great reaction since the pilot project 12 months ago.
“It’s been up and running now for a year and it’s in great shape. We’ve just had a lovely session with the 4th class from Claddagh NS.
